Umberto Eco

Umberto Eco (1932–2016) was an Italian novelist, literary critic, philosopher, semiotician, and university professor. He wrote internationally known novels such as The Name of the Rose, Foucault's Pendulum, The Island of the Day Before, The Prague Cemetery, and Numero Zero, and he also published widely on semiotics, interpretation, translation, literature, beauty, ugliness, and media culture. Eco taught at universities in Italy and abroad and founded the Department of Media Studies at the University of the Republic of San Marino.
