His books combine extensive reporting, personal voice, and narrative storytelling to examine people at work and the social worlds around them. His subjects included computer engineering, home construction, elementary education, aging, small-town life, global health, war, immigration, entrepreneurship, and homelessness. He won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for The Soul of a New Machine and also wrote Good Prose with his longtime editor Richard Todd.
