After taking a portfolio to Marvel and DC in 1977, Klein was offered a temporary production job at DC by Jack Adler; when the staffer he was covering quit, Klein was offered the position. He became a full-time freelancer in 1987.

Who influenced Todd Klein’s lettering?
Klein credits his grandfather Rex Derr with first teaching him lettering, and says he learned comic-lettering basics from John Workman while studying Gaspar Saladino, John Costanza, and Ben Oda. He has described Saladino as a favorite letterer and role model.
