Stephen King is an American author known for horror, suspense, fantasy, science fiction, and crime fiction. He was born in Portland, Maine, in 1947, and spent much of his childhood in Maine.
While studying at the University of Maine, King wrote a weekly campus-newspaper column and sold his first professional short story, “The Glass Floor,” in 1967. He was teaching high-school English when Doubleday accepted Carrie in 1973, enabling him to write full time.
King has drawn on both literary horror and lived experience: he has cited Arthur Machen’s “The Great God Pan” as an influence on one story, while the death of his daughter’s cat and a nearby pet cemetery helped inspire Pet Sematary.
