Maas is a New York native and lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and dog.
At sixteen, Maas began posting an early version of Throne of Glass on FictionPress, where it attracted a large readership. She later revised the manuscript, signed with an agent, and published the novel with Bloomsbury in 2012.
Her fantasy writing was influenced by fairy tales, especially a Cinderella idea that inspired Throne of Glass. She has also cited Robin McKinley, Garth Nix, Japanese anime, Star Wars, and pop music as inspirations.
Her books have won multiple Goodreads Choice Awards; Goodreads reported that House of Sky and Breath earned her seventh win in 2022. TIME has described Maas as a major force behind the rise of romantasy, a genre blending romantic and fantasy fiction.
