Pierce Brown is an American science-fiction author best known for the New York Times bestselling Red Rising saga.
Brown says his family moved seven times before he was 18, and that his grandfather’s storytelling strongly shaped his imagination. He also connects his experiences of feeling like an outsider with Red Rising’s themes of conformity and rebellion.
Before establishing himself as a novelist, Brown worked in social media at a startup, on the Disney lot at ABC Studios, as an NBC page, and as an aide on a U.S. Senate campaign.
Brown says reading Sophocles’ Antigone and seeing Mars during a mountain hike sparked the idea. He then combined ancient Greek drama with spaceships, Roman influences, betrayal, and rebellion.
Brown’s Red Rising won Goodreads’ 2014 award for Best Debut Goodreads Author, and Golden Son won the 2015 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Science Fiction.
