Oprah Winfrey is an American media proprietor, television host, producer, actress, philanthropist, and author. She became globally known through The Oprah Winfrey Show, which was nationally syndicated from 1986 to 2011.
She was born on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi. She spent her early childhood in poverty with her grandmother in rural Mississippi, where she developed a strong interest in reading and public speaking.

Winfrey began in Nashville radio after winning local pageants, then became Nashville’s first African American television news anchor at age 19. After broadcasting in Baltimore and Chicago, she launched The Oprah Winfrey Show into national syndication in 1986, where it quickly became the top-rated talk show.
