Patterson has said that he was born in Northern Ireland and has lived in Australia for most of his life.
He has said that he became an Elvis fan in 1969 after hearing “Edge of Reality.” His organized involvement began in 1986, when he joined a local Elvis fan club.
Patterson became president of his local fan club, which evolved into the Elvis Information Network in 1990. In the late 1990s, he helped move it online, expanding its reach from a regional organization to a global source of Elvis news, articles, interviews, and reviews.
