Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (1839–1908) was a Brazilian writer whose work encompasses novels, short stories, poetry, drama, literary criticism, essays, chronicles, and correspondence. Born and based in Rio de Janeiro, he is widely regarded as one of the central figures of Brazilian and Portuguese-language literature and as a foundational author of Brazilian realism. He was a founder and the first president of the Academia Brasileira de Letras.
