Kate Elizabeth Russell is an American writer originally from eastern Maine. She holds an MFA from Indiana University and a PhD from the University of Kansas. Her debut novel, My Dark Vanessa, explores grooming, sexual abuse, memory, agency, consent, and victimhood through the story of a woman reckoning with a relationship begun with her English teacher when she was fifteen.

She earned an MFA from Indiana University and a PhD in creative writing from the University of Kansas.

Reading Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita at age 14 strongly influenced her, and she has also cited a Maine news story about an accused abuser as an influence on her fiction.
