Italo Calvino (1923–1985) was born in Santiago de las Vegas, Cuba, and grew up in Sanremo, Italy. A Resistance participant and longtime Einaudi editor, he developed from neorealist fiction toward allegorical fantasy, cosmicomic storytelling, experimental novels, essays, folklore, memoir, theatre, and opera libretti. He lived in Paris from 1967 to 1980 and was associated with the Oulipo literary group.
