Eric Brown (1960–2023) was a British science-fiction, crime, horror, and children's writer from Yorkshire. His first published work was the children's radio play Noel's Ark in 1982. He wrote novels, novellas, short-story collections, children's fiction, plays, and collaborative works, and also worked as a critic for The Guardian.

Eric Brown (1960–2023) was a British science-fiction writer who also wrote crime and children’s fiction and reviewed science fiction for The Guardian.

He was born in Haworth, West Yorkshire, on 24 May 1960, and died in Edinburgh on 21 March 2023.
He began publishing with the children’s play Noel’s Ark in 1982, then entered science-fiction publishing with a story in Interzone in 1987.
His work engaged with traditions such as space opera, cyberpunk, and planetary romance, while critics have noted echoes of writers including Cordwainer Smith, G. K. Chesterton, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Robert Holdstock.
He won the BSFA Award for Best Short Fiction for “Hunting the Slarque” in 1999 and “The Children of Winter” in 2001. He is remembered as a prolific, humane writer whose work crossed science fiction, crime, and children’s literature.
