Rovelli was born in Verona, Italy, in 1956. He studied at the University of Bologna and earned a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Padua in 1986.
He is one of the principal developers of loop quantum gravity, a research program seeking to reconcile quantum mechanics with general relativity. He has also led quantum-gravity research at Aix-Marseille University.
