Audrey Niffenegger is an American writer and visual artist whose work spans novels, graphic novels, illustrated novellas, artist's books, short-story collections, and art criticism. Her debut novel, The Time Traveler's Wife, was published in 2003 and became an international bestseller. Her other major works include Her Fearful Symmetry, The Three Incestuous Sisters, The Adventuress, The Night Bookmobile, Raven Girl, Bizarre Romance, Ghostly, and Awake in the Dream World. Niffenegger's bookworks combine narrative, printmaking, illustration, and book design.

She was born in South Haven, Michigan, and grew up largely in or near Chicago. She studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned an MFA from Northwestern University in 1991.

Niffenegger first imagined the story in 1997 as a graphic novel about involuntary time travel. She ultimately made it a novel because sudden shifts in time were difficult to represent with still images.
