Adam Hochschild is an American historian, journalist, lecturer, and author of narrative nonfiction. He co-founded Mother Jones magazine and has written for publications including The New Yorker, Harper's, The Atlantic, The New York Review of Books, The New York Times Magazine, and The Nation. His books range from memoir and essay collections to histories of South Africa, Stalinist Russia, colonial Congo, abolitionism, the First World War, the Spanish Civil War, American radicalism, and democracy. He has taught at the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and has received major honors including the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the PEN USA Literary Award, and fellowships and awards recognizing his body of work.
