Walter Tevis Books in Order
Walter Stone Tevis was born in San Francisco in 1928 and grew up partly in Kentucky. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he studied English literature at the University of Kentucky, earning bachelor's and master's degrees. He taught in Kentucky high schools and later taught English literature and creative writing at Ohio University for fourteen years. His first novel, The Hustler, was published in 1959, followed by The Man Who Fell to Earth, Mockingbird, The Steps of the Sun, The Queen's Gambit, and The Color of Money. He also published the short-story collection Far from Home. Tevis died of lung cancer in 1984. A posthumous collection, The King Is Dead, brought together Far from Home and numerous additional stories, including previously unpublished material.
