Walter Michael Miller Jr. (1923–1996) was an American science-fiction writer and World War II veteran who converted to Catholicism in 1947. During roughly a decade of active publishing, he wrote about forty stories, many shaped by religious, ethical, technological, and post-apocalyptic concerns. His only novel published during his lifetime, A Canticle for Leibowitz, won the 1961 Hugo Award. His posthumous sequel, Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman, was completed from his manuscript by Terry Bisson.
