Vernor Steffen Vinge (1944–2024) was an American science-fiction author, mathematician, and computer scientist who taught at San Diego State University. His fiction includes the Realtime/Bobbles novels, the Zones of Thought series, and the standalone novels Grimm's World, Tatja Grimm's World, The Witling, and Rainbows End. His novella True Names was an influential early depiction of cyberspace, while his nonfiction popularized the concept of the technological singularity.
