Upton Beall Sinclair Jr. (1878–1968) was an American writer, journalist, muckraker, socialist, and political activist. He wrote nearly one hundred books across fiction, nonfiction, drama, memoir, and political commentary. His 1906 novel The Jungle exposed conditions in Chicago's meatpacking industry and became one of the most influential works of American muckraking. His later work included the Lanny Budd historical-novel series, political writings about California and EPIC, autobiographical works, plays, essays, and books on journalism, education, religion, health, and social reform.
