Thomas Mann (1875–1955) was a German novelist, short-story writer, essayist, memoirist, playwright, and cultural critic. His major works combine psychological realism, irony, mythology, philosophy, and historical reflection. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929, principally for Buddenbrooks.
