Svetlana Alexievich is a Belarusian writer and journalist born in 1948. Her documentary prose is built from carefully composed collages of testimony, exploring war, political upheaval, catastrophe, and the lived experience of Soviet and post-Soviet people. She received the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature for her polyphonic writing, described by the Swedish Academy as a monument to suffering and courage in her time.
