Stephen R. Donaldson (born 1947) is an American author of fantasy, science fiction, mystery, and nonfiction. He made his publishing debut in 1977 with The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. His major works include the Mordant's Need duology, the Gap sequence, the Mick Axbrewder mystery novels, the Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, and The Great God's War trilogy. He has also published standalone novellas, short-story collections, and essays.
