Stephen Fender was born in San Francisco and educated at Stanford and in the United Kingdom. He taught at Santa Clara, Williams, Dartmouth, Edinburgh, University College London, and the University of Sussex, where he served as Professor and Chair of American Studies. His books examine American literature, emigration, national identity, the California Trail, the New Deal, and literary history.
