Stephen Edward Ambrose (1936–2002) was an American historian, biographer, and professor, chiefly associated with the University of New Orleans. He wrote extensively about Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, World War II, the Lewis and Clark expedition, westward expansion, and American foreign policy. His books include major biographies, military histories, memoir, essay collections, children's nonfiction, and the posthumously published historical novel This Vast Land.
