Shehan Karunatilaka is a Sri Lankan writer and creative director, born in Galle in 1975 and raised in Colombo. He is the author of the novels Chinaman: The Legend of Pradeep Mathew and The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida, the short-story collection The Birth Lottery and Other Surprises, and several children's picture books. His work combines dark humor, satire, cricket, Sri Lankan history, politics, mythology, and the supernatural. Chinaman won the Gratiaen Prize, Commonwealth Book Prize, and DSC Prize for South Asian Literature; The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida won the 2022 Booker Prize.
