Nevil Shute Norway (1899–1960) was an English novelist, aeronautical engineer, and aircraft-company founder who wrote under the name Nevil Shute. After studying engineering at Oxford, he worked on the R100 airship and helped establish Airspeed Ltd. During the Second World War he served in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, developing weapons and recording the Normandy landings. He emigrated to Australia in 1945, where he continued writing until his death in Melbourne. His best-known novels include A Town Like Alice and On the Beach; his autobiography is Slide Rule.
