Michel Foucault (1926–1984) was a French philosopher, historian, and social theorist. His major studies examined madness, medicine, the human sciences, prisons, governmentality, sexuality, and ancient ethics. He taught at the Collège de France from 1970 until his death; many of his lecture courses were published posthumously from authorized recordings and preparatory materials.
