Michael Ende (1929–1995) was a German writer whose work spans children's novels, fairy tales, picture books, poetry, plays, opera libretti, essays, conversations, and literary miscellanies. He began with Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivführer, later achieving international recognition with Momo and Die unendliche Geschichte. His writing combines myth, surrealism, philosophical reflection, linguistic play, and criticism of technocratic ideas. He was the son of surrealist painter Edgar Ende and also wrote about his father's art.
