Marcel Proust (1871–1922) was a French modernist writer whose work transformed the novel through its exploration of memory, time, desire, social life, and artistic vocation. His major achievement is the seven-volume novel cycle À la recherche du temps perdu, published between 1913 and 1927, with its final volumes appearing posthumously. He also published short fiction, poetry, literary criticism, pastiches, journalism, notebooks, and other prose.
