Jules Gabriel Verne (1828–1905) was a French writer best known for the Voyages extraordinaires, a cycle of scientifically informed adventure novels published chiefly by Pierre-Jules Hetzel. His work also includes plays, operettas, poetry, art criticism, geographical histories, memoirs, short-story collections, and posthumously published manuscripts. He is widely regarded as one of the foundational authors of science fiction.
