John Nathan is an American writer, translator, scholar, and filmmaker. He is Professor Emeritus of Japanese Cultural Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and has taught at Princeton University. His work focuses on modern Japanese literature, comparative studies, translation, Japanese cinema, Japanese society, and business culture. He is known for biographies of Yukio Mishima and Natsume Sōseki, studies of Japan and Sony, a memoir, and the historical novel A Bintel Brif. His translations include works by Yukio Mishima, Kenzaburō Ōe, Kōbō Abe, and Natsume Sōseki.
