John E. Woods was an award-winning American translator of German-language literature. He translated major novels by Thomas Mann, much of Arno Schmidt's fiction, and works by Alfred Döblin, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Christoph Ransmayr, Ingo Schulze, Patrick Süskind, and other German-language writers. His honors included the National Book Award for Translation, PEN Translation Prizes, the Schlegel-Tieck Prize, the Helen and Kurt Wolff Translator's Prize, and the Goethe Medal.
