Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) was a German writer, statesman, critic, artist, and natural philosopher. His major literary achievements include the novels Die Leiden des jungen Werthers, Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre, and Die Wahlverwandtschaften; the verse dramas Faust, Iphigenie auf Tauris, Egmont, and Torquato Tasso; the poetry collections Römische Elegien and West-östlicher Divan; and the autobiographical works Dichtung und Wahrheit and Italienische Reise. He also published influential writings on art, literature, botany, optics, color, geology, and morphology.
