Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818–1883) was a Russian writer associated with the realist tradition. His major novels chronicle changing Russian society from the 1830s through the 1870s, while his hunting sketches, novellas, plays, poetry, literary essays, and memoirs established him as one of the nineteenth century's most influential Russian authors. He spent much of his later life in Western Europe and helped introduce Russian literature to European audiences.
