Émile Zola (1840–1902) was a French novelist, critic, journalist, playwright, and political writer. He is best known for the twenty-novel Rougon-Macquart cycle, his later cycles Les Trois Villes and Les Quatre Évangiles, his naturalist criticism, and his public intervention in the Dreyfus affair.
