Edith Wharton (1862–1937) was an American writer and designer whose career spanned novels, novellas, short fiction, poetry, travel writing, criticism, architecture and garden writing, wartime nonfiction, and memoir. Her major novels include The House of Mirth, Ethan Frome, The Custom of the Country, and The Age of Innocence, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. She also co-authored The Decoration of Houses and left the unfinished novel The Buccaneers, completed and published after her death.
