Douglas R. Hofstadter (born 1945) is an American cognitive scientist, physicist, writer, and translator. He is a distinguished professor of cognitive science and comparative literature at Indiana University Bloomington, where he directed the Center for Research on Concepts and Cognition. His work explores consciousness, the sense of self, analogy-making, creativity, artificial intelligence, literary translation, mathematics, and visual ambiguity. His books include the Pulitzer Prize-winning Gödel, Escher, Bach, Metamagical Themas, Le Ton beau de Marot, I Am a Strange Loop, Surfaces and Essences, and Ambigrammia.
