Annie Proulx, born Edna Ann Proulx in 1935, is an American writer of novels, short fiction, essays, memoir, and practical nonfiction. Her major fiction includes Postcards, The Shipping News, Accordion Crimes, That Old Ace in the Hole, and Barkskins, along with the Wyoming Stories collections. She won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction for Postcards, and the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award for The Shipping News. Her story Brokeback Mountain was first published in 1997 and later adapted for film and opera. Her nonfiction includes books on gardening and cider-making, Bird Cloud, Red Desert, and Fen, Bog and Swamp.
